Louis Stokes

Louis Stokes

The LSAMP program was named in honor of Louis Stokes (1925 - 2015), the first Black congressman elected by the state of Ohio. Before serving for 30 years in Congress, Louis was a prominent civil rights lawyer who pursued racial justice at the local, district and federal level. As a congressman, he became the first Black member to serve on the Appropriations Committee, as well as supporting the foundation of the Congressional Black Caucus.
