Pierce College is proud to announce the Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction: affordable, high-quality continuing education courses designed to take your career in Emergency Management to the next level.  

Led by experienced Pierce College faculty, all of whom are working emergency management professionals, these courses bring the same exceptional Pierce College education we offer in our degree programs to professionals worldwide looking to gain new skills and expand their professional networks.  

Courses will cover topics such as artificial intelligence in emergency management, accessibility, the psychological effects of disasters, evaluation strategies, as well as incident leadership and multi-agency coordination, which will be offered in Spanish. All of the courses are virtual and provide the ability for students to complete the course in their own time, with some courses offering synchronous class activities. These courses can also be used toward continuing educations requirements for many industry certifications.  

“We’re excited about the ability to offer these as part of the institute to our national and international partners,” said Sarah Miller, chair of the Pierce College Emergency Management program. “There is a tremendous, worldwide need for disaster risk reduction. If we cannot reduce the risks, then we deal with greater impact to our communities when disaster does happen.”  

Emergency and disaster management is a growing field, as organizations and communities have begun to truly recognize their own vulnerability to disasters. Public and private sector employers are searching for highly skilled professionals who can conduct emergency planning and training, perform business and organization impact analysis and continuity planning, coordinate disaster response and recovery efforts, and navigate the administrative and technical demands of disaster and emergency management efforts.
