Adjunct Faculty Professional Development

In addition to the calendar of professional development offerings, we collaborate with a variety of district departments and committees to provide professional development events throughout the academic year designed to include adjunct faculty at Pierce College.

Targeted Skills Training Program

This professional development opportunity for faculty started in 2012; so far 33 faculty have participated. The skill building program has a focus on increased pedagogical effectiveness with an emphasis on using technology and emerging instructional models for innovative outcomes. Each year, a cohort of faculty complete a 4-day summer institute and design action research projects in the classroom. Over the following academic year, faculty participants complete their projects and share their findings with their colleagues.

Upon successful completion of the Targeted Skills Training Program, faculty are eligible to receive a promotional salary increase of $2000.  Currently, faculty members are eligible for this promotional opportunity one time.

All tenured faculty members who have not previously participated are eligible to apply for the Targeted Skills Training Program.

Master Teaching Program

This faculty professional development opportunity began in 2006; since then over 70 faculty have participated in the program. Each year, up to 12 faculty can participate in the Master Teaching Program.

This includes a weeklong seminar where faculty learn from each other and experts about effective teaching and learning practices. Faculty also design a teaching and learning project and seek feedback from their peers. Over the following academic year, these faculty carry out their projects and assess the impact on student learning. At the end of the year, the Master Teaching participants share out their findings with the cohort and beyond.

Upon successful completion of the Master Teaching Program, faculty are eligible to receive a promotional salary increase of $2500. Currently, faculty members are eligible for this promotional opportunity one time.

Pierce College’s Master Teaching Program was featured in a 2013 Aspen Institute College Excellence Program report.
