Assistive Technology

The Assistive Technology Lab provides software and equipment for use by Pierce College students. The lab is located in Cascade Building (CAS) 503 on the Fort Steilacoom campus. If you need to use the lab, please contact ADS at ads@pierce.ctc.edu. We will schedule any visits to the lab in advance and on a case by case basis. ADS staff can be present if a student needs equipment from the lab.

Dragon Naturally Speaking Software

By taking away the mechanical aspects of typing, Dragon software allows users to create and edit documents, send email, or search the web with unparalleled speed, ease, and comfort — simply by speaking.

Central Access Reader (CAR)

CAR is a free, open source, text-to- speech application designed specifically for students with print-related disabilities. CAR reads Word documents and pasted text using the voice installed on your computer.  CAR has an intuitive interface.

NaturalReader

NaturalReader is a text-to-speech software with natural sounding voices. This easy-to-use software can convert any written text such as Microsoft Word, web pages, PDF files, and eBooks into spoken words. NaturalReader can also convert any written text into audio files such as MP3 or WAV. NaturalReader has many other functions, such as OCR. The OCR function can convert printed characters into digital text and it is up to 99% accurate. This allows you to listen to your printed files or edit in a word-processing program.

JAWS Screen Reading Software 

This program makes computers accessible to students who are blind or visually impaired by using text-to-speech technology. JAWS also incorporates modified keyboard functions to allow students’ access to programs not generally accessible through standard Windows controls.

NonVisual Desktop Access Reader (NVDA)

NVDA is a free “screen reader” which enables blind and vision impaired people to use computers. It reads the text on the screen in a computerized voice. You can control what is read to you by moving the cursor to the relevant area of text with a mouse or the arrows on your keyboard.

Kurzweil 3000 Software

Kurzweil 3000 software is an assistive technology text-to-speech learning tool that supports the concept of Universal Design for Learning. It contains a powerful suite of reading, writing and study skills tools that make curriculum accessible to all students.

Electric Table

Using these tables, students are able to raise or lower it to accommodate their heights, disability or personal preference.

Clear View C Magnification

The Clear View enables you to read, write, view photos, do work and so much more. The Clear View magnifies and enhances text, objects and images and allows you to view them in your preferred high-contrast color combination, brightness and contrast settings. It is easy to operate.

Inspiration Software

Inspiration is an essential tool for students to rely on to plan, research and complete projects successfully. With the integrated Diagram and Outline Views, they create graphic organizers and expand topics into writing.
